No Three-peat for Tebow!

Today I woke up in a mixed mood: I was happy because I had to cheer for my women’s basketball team (and we won) but at the same time I was upset because the game was at the same time of probably the biggest matchup of the college football season, Florida v. Alabama.

I’ve been dying for an upset for so long, and finally one happened, when I couldn’t watch it of course:

#1 Florida lost to #3 Alabama in the SEC Championship, 13-32.

That kinda qualifies as a blowout (21 point differential).

So with this loss, Tebow won’t get his third national championship. He could’ve just went pro instead. Atleast he had a good season (minus this loss of course).

So ready for the season to be over!

Well guys, the regular season is just about over, and I am actually excited about this. This season has been a bit boring to me and I just don’t feel that same force within me to be glued to CBS and ESPN on Saturdays for some good ol’ college football anymore. Check out this video (you’ll see I’m not the only one feeling this way):

Oops, Guess I Predicted Wrong!!

Ok, so the weekend is here and I would just like to apologize to everyone for the prediction that I made, because clearly I was wrong. Shame on me. For anyone confused about my prediction, check out my previous post. For anyone who doesn’t feel like looking at the last one, I said that the BCS Championship Game would be between USC and Alabama.

Ha…Ha…Ha…

After USC got beat down by Oregon last week, USC‘s hopes of making it to the championship game have officially died. Sorry Pete Carroll.

So I don’t think I’m going to make another prediction, because I don’t want to make another mistake. However, I do want to know who you guys think will make it to the BCS Championship Game. Let me know!! Comment!!!!!

Prediction Time!

It’s midway through the season, and I think it is about that time that we make a prediction as to which team will make it to the coveted BCS National Championship Game.

This season hasn’t really been filled with too many upsets, a couple yes, but nowhere near as many as I would like. I’m still waiting for Florida to lose, but I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath on that one because even when they are on the brink of losing, they always seem to come out victorious. What can I say, I love the underdogs…

So I’m going to make my prediction right here, right now:

Alabama v. USC

Why? Well I feel it in my bones (or maybe that’s just my flu symptom) that Florida does have a loss coming up, an unexpected, upsetting one since they don’t really play anyone too threatening for the rest of the season. And I don’t see Texas making it into the big game because Colt McCoy is a little shaky in my book…Once again, these are just my opinions, and I would love to here some disagreement!

So which team do you think is guaranteed to make it to the Rose Bowl/BCS National Championship? Take the poll and let me know.

Hmm, Should I Call It Luck, or Skill? #6 USC Avoids Upset at #25 Notre Dame

While watching the final minutes of the Notre Dame v. USC game, I know that my professor had to be on the edge of her seat, with her fingers crossed, praying that her alma mater USC came out victorious.

The football gods smiled on her, and USC won, barely.

The last couple minutes of the game were intense!! Notre Dame only trailed by 7, and thanks to some major flags called on USC, Notre Dame’s field position just got better and better, getting them to 1st and goal, with nine seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Mind you, Notre Dame’s junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen was on a hot streak, throwing two touchdowns in the fourth quarter (putting the Fighting Irish back into the game, 34-37.)

However, the third time just wasn’t the charm…Maybe the pressure that he was feeling got to him, because Clausen’s passing game went downhill in the final seconds of the game. Then in the “last” play of the game, Clausen’s pass was knocked down by USC’s Josh Pinkard and the Trojans thought that the game was over.

Umm, wrong, try again.

The officials ruled that there was one second left on the clock, meaning one more play for Notre Dame. Just when it seemed like Notre Dame was about to break its losing streak against USC, Clausen threw an incomplete pass to Duval Kamara, resulting in a heartbreaking loss for Notre Dame.

I know you are smiling Professor =)

I don’t really care for Notre Dame, but I was hoping for an upset, just to shake things up a little bit. Was today just another case of USC just being the better team? Or was Notre Dame just particularly unlucky today? Thoughts anyone?

Until next week!!

The AP Top 25 Poll Is Starting to Confuse Me, AGAIN!!

I haven’t always been the biggest sports fanatic.

I still consider myself new to the whole “dedicated sports fan” lifestyle. So naturally, there are some things about college football that I don’t understand.

I get football (let’s not get that confused), but it seems like every year the AP Poll confuses me.

Who decides the rankings, and why do teams with flawless records rank lower than teams with a loss or two? I always end up scratching my head when I think of these things, so I decided to ask my brother, Danny, who is a big college football fan (Miami (FL), and will be playing football next fall at Central Connecticut State) for some help understanding.

So naturally I asked him how does the poll work. “The writers vote on the Top 25,” my brother said. “Some teams with worse records are sometimes higher probably because of their reputation and they play a tougher schedule.” He also mentioned that it had to do with the opponent’s record and the conference that they play in.

So here we go again with this “tougher schedule” nonsense. Check out my other post “Loved by Few, Hated by Many: the Life of a Boise State Fan” for my thoughts on tougher schedules and conferences and what not.

Still not satisfied by my brother’s attempts to educate me, I wikipedia’d it… Check out the article and tell me what you think… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AP_Poll

I feel a little more informed now, I guess =/

Til next time,

What’s Up With the Weather? Maybe It’s Hurricane Season…

It’s been several years since the Hurricanes have been a force to be reckoned with, but will this be the year the “U” takes back the crown and ends up on top again?

According to my brother, yes, this is the Hurricanes year.

And after today’s game against #8 Oklahoma, I might be a believer in the “U” as well (maybe).

So last week they took an “L” against Virginia Tech, moving them from #9 to #17, so winning today against a top ten team was absolutely crucial. The win, 21-20, may have something to do with Oklahoma‘s Heisman trophy winner quarterback, Sam Bradford, being out with a shoulder injury, but in the end, isn’t a win, a win?

Even though Miami had a slow start, trailing 10-0 until 8:20 into the second quarter (quarterback Jacory Harris threw an 18 yd TD pass to Jimmy Graham) they still managed to get fired up. Harris  kept the momentum going, throwing an additional two TD passes in the third quarter, then leading 21-10.

The Sooners scored a touchdown late in the 3rd quarter, and then scored a FG in the fourth, but by then it was just too little too late. The Sooners just couldn’t outlast the Hurricanes, losing 21-20.

Ouch! What a heartbreaker…

So with this win, where will Miami move on the charts? And does this mean that the Sooners (the only top ten team to lose this week) will end up in one of the “not so cool” bowl games at the end of the season? Only time will tell!! What do you think?

Oh, and Boise State beat UC Davis, 34-16. Just thought you’d all like to know that!! Go Broncs!!!!

Loved by Few, Hated by Many: The Life of a Boise State Fan

“Eww, who likes Boise State??”

“They only get ranked high because they have an easy schedule.”

”Danielle, you need to pick a new team.”

My life as a Boise State fan, is not an easy one. Surrounded by haters, it seems like everyone has the right to like whatever team they like–the Buckeyes, the Trojans, the Gators, etc–but when it comes to me, I always get grilled for liking Boise State.

Time and time again, I hear that I shouldn’t like Boise Statebecause they are overrated and have a weak schedule. Oh really?? So the AP Poll is wrong? And when they blow out teams it’s because they aren’t really good? I know that that cannot be the case.

I have a problem being told that they are only good (#5 in the AP Poll now, 4-0, and they just spanked Bowling Green last night) because they don’t play anybody good. Just because a team isn’t ranked doesn’t make them not good. When USC went into their game against Washington, they probably didn’t take it as seriously as they did the game the previous week against Ohio State. What was the result of that game again? A loss to unranked Washington, diminishing practically all hope for USC to be in a good bowl game this season. Or how about we take a look at this past weekend:  so many teams that were ranked lost to unranked teams, causing major upsets and totally shaking up the AP Poll standings.

My thing is, no team should be underestimated. While some teams may not be as good as others, just know that every underdog team is fighting their hardest to deliver an upset to a top ranked team. Boise State is now #5, for the first time in their regular season history, and trust me when I say that people are dying to knock them down. Boise State is a good team, with a large group of high-calibre athletes (like Titus Young) who all just want to be the best. So please, just let them do what they do best, and give them the credit that they deserve……

So do you agree? Or disagree? Did I change your mind at all about Boise State? Let me know!

Whoa Nelly!! Can You Say: Upsets??

Another weekend in college football is over. And as expected, or maybe as unexpected, this was quite an eventful weekend!

All across the board there have been upsets. Teams that weren’t supposed to lose, lost. Come Monday there will definitely be some major changes in the AP Poll…

So here is a quick rundown:

  • #5 Penn State loses to Iowa, 18-10. The major game changing play in this game was a blocked punt attempt by Iowa, which resulted in a touchdown, giving Iowa their first lead of the game 11-10.
  • #6 Cal gets BLOWN OUT by Oregon, 42-3! OUCH!!!!!!
  • #9 Miami loses to #11 Virginia Tech, 31-7
  • #18 Florida State loses to USF, 17-7

However, not everyone was disappointed this weekend:

  • #1 Florida remains #1, after blowing out Kentucky, 41-7. Quarterback Tim Tebow (who was sick this week) received a HUGE hit, leaving him lying on the field for several minutes, and ultimately being taken from the game to the hospital via ambulance
  • #2 Texas SPANKED UTEP, 64-7. Umm, that’s just embarrassing
  • #3 Alabama gave it to Arkansas, 35-7
  • #8 Boise State (My fav!!) beat up on Bowling Green, 49-14
  • Both #7 LSU and #23 Michigan scraped a victory today: LSU beat Mississippi State 30-26, and Michigan beat Indiana 36-33 (in what many consider thanks to a controversial call)

So this weekend had it’s highs and lows, but as long as my Broncos won, and remain undefeated I am happy. And now I can’t wait to see how the polls look come Monday.

What was your favorite game of this weekend? Are you surprised about any of these games? (I like to call myself a psychic and say that I foresaw Penn State losing to Iowa, lol.) Let me know your thoughts!

Bowl Dreams Gone for USC?

In what is probably going to be one of the biggest upsets in college football this season, (then) #3 USC fell to unranked Washington, 16-13.

All I can say is WOW!

I mean, who really saw that one coming? Yes, USC‘s starting quarterback, true freshman Matt Barkley was injured and incapable of playing, but honestly who thought that would have such an impact on the outcome of this game?

So let’s look at both team’s quarterbacks for the game:

  • Aaron Corp (USC): completed 13 of 22 passes, for 110 yards, with one interception
  • Jake Locker (Washington): completed 21 of 35 passes, for 237 yards

So obviously Locker appears to have had the better game. But, for it to have been sophomore Aaron Corp’s,  first start at the quarterback position for the the Trojans, honestly I don’t think he did too bad.

The game is over, the damage to USC has been done. They fell from #3 to #12, so is it safe to say that their chance of being in a “good” bowl game is done? Does USC depend on true freshman quarterback Matt Barkley more than they may have thought?

What do you think???
